Tom sat and paced in his next session with Millie. “How can I get rid of those thoughts that I’m stupid?”

“We work on that script in your mind. Together. We look at what you’ve accomplished in a few short months and acknowledge that someone who truly doesn’t have the desire, drive and insight could not have done what you’ve done. Tom, I’m aware that you still hear that destructive script that Adam Beiler inserted in your mind and heart. I’m glad you brought this up to me. Because, if you don’t destroy those destructive words that Mister Beiler planted in your mentality, you’re going to backslide. And we don’t want that.”

“Nee. We definitely don’t want that. Millie, I’m ready to do whatever it takes. Even hypnosis.”

“Hopefully, it won’t, but if it comes to that, I will hypnotize you again. For now, tell me what thoughts you have when you’re told you’re doing well.”

“You’re stupid. A failure. You’re never going to accomplish anything.” Tom’s voice was gravelly as he spoke.

“One question. Does Mister Beiler’s voice sound that low when he talks?”

“Ya. It’s like a memorized script, like Elaine calls it. Or like a tape recording. One I want to get rid of.”

“Got it. Okay. For now, before our next session, I want you to talk back to that recording. Every time it starts up. Tell it that you are capable and you have accomplished much in just a few months. If need be, tell it to shut up.”

“Gladly.” Tom’s voice was grim.

After Tom had left, Millie twirled her chair around so she could look out on the peaceful scene outside her office window. She prayed as she thought about Tom’s current situation. God, he’s been through so much! Please help him begin to fight back against that destructive voice that his blasted father installed in his mind. He has done more in just four months than most men do in their entire lives! All so he can improve his life and get his kinder back home. Over the next few days, Millie thought about what she could do to help Tom. “CBT. Apply it directly to the thinking process his father taught him. And, if needed, additional hypnosis. He may need to use that as a tool for the rest of his life.”
